Kingston’s Etymology – Where Does the Name Kingston Come From?

Kingston first settled in the 1600s on First Nation lands named Katarokwi. Later on, it was referred to as King’s Town in honour of King George III, and then it was shortened to Kingston in 1788. Kingston is also nicknamed the "Limestone City" due to the many heritage buildings constructed using local limestone, including the lakeside Kingston City Hall.

Kingston Location

Kingston is a city located in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal). Kingston is midway between Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec.
