Must-Visit Places in Jacó
Carara National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. It is well-known for the endangered scarlet macaw population that can be found living within the tropical forest and other tropical birds. Originally created as a biological reserve, Carara was upgraded to a national park in 1998. Travellers can see both the three and two-toed sloth within the park as well as the famous Crocodile Bridge overlooking Tarcoles River, where wild crocodiles – some as large as 16 feet in length – can be observed in their natural setting from the bridge. There are two hiking trails in the park: the 2.7-mile Laguna Meandrica Trail and 0.6-mile Araceas Nature Trail. The walking trails are accessible for kids and travellers with disabilities.
In Bijagual, a mountain town near Jacó, Bijagual Waterfall is the main attraction. The most popular way to experience the 590-foot waterfall is on a guided horseback riding tour. Be on the lookout for wildlife such as frogs, monkeys, toucans, sloths, and scarlet macaws and enjoy views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and seaside fishing villages.
Finally, go to the Aerial Nature Walk to have yourself a bird’s eye view of a tropical rainforest. This 3-hour-long tour will allow you to see the rainforest from a height, with the bark and the treetops. Literally gliding above the rainforest, the tram can house a small group of about 10 people. The aerial tram is just like a fenced balcony, and you can have a clear view of the rainforest below. You can also explore the plant gardens and exhibits.
Transportation in Jacó
Since Jacó is a small beach town, it has no exclusive public transportation services. However, taxi, bus, and mini-bus services are available and they serve the town on a regular daily schedule. Transportation by bus is the least expensive way to travel around Costa Rica in general. On holidays, more frequent service is offered. In the area's busiest season, which is December through April, it's a good idea to purchase weekend and public holiday tickets at least three days in advance.
Taxi services are also available in Jacó, and all taxis have metres. There is also some ferry transportation, but it is limited.
