Why Study at Hymers College
Before his death, Revd Dr John Hymers, Rector of Brandesburton, left a substantial sum in his will to the mayor and corporation of Hull for the founding of a school "for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found among the vast and varied population of the town and port of Hull".
Hymers College opened in 1893 as a school for boys on the site of the old Botanic Gardens of Hull. The school soon established itself as one of the leading schools in the northeast for its academic, sporting, and musical achievements. Over the years, the numbers expanded and new buildings were added. In 1972, the college started admitting girls.
In 1975, when the direct grant scheme was phased out, it had to be decided whether the school should become part of the comprehensive system adopted by Hull at the time or become an independent school. It was decided that the school would go fully independent, and in 1989, the decision was made to become fully co-educational.
The school's catchment area increased to cover the south bank of the River Humber with the opening of the Humber bridge in 1981. That resulted in the school's numbers extending to their current figure of just under one thousand pupils in the 1990s.
