Why Study at University College School?
University College School (UCS) was established in 1830 as part of University College London and relocated to Hampstead in 1907. It is an independent day school offering programmes for boys from the age of four to the age of 18.
UCS is a member of the Eton Group of twelve independent schools and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. It is well-known for its well-established bursary programme and music scholarships, as well as its outreach work with a number of other North and West London schools, including Westminster Academy, the London Academy of Excellence, and UCL Academy. It also has close relations to Uganda's Equatorial College School, as well as philanthropic work in Romania and India.
Departments and Divisions
University College School has four departments: The Pre-Prep, The Junior Branch, The Senior School, and The Sixth Form. The Pre-Prep department is designed for 100 pupils from the ages of four to seven. Students learn through a variety of carefully organized activities, including formal teaching and supervised indoor and outdoor play. Pupils are encouraged to think creatively, investigate their surroundings, and solve problems so they can develop their own understanding of the world. As for the Junior Branch, it accommodates up to 240 boys aged seven to 11. The Junior Branch's goal is to allow each student to grow progressively in academic and personal disciplines, as well as self-confidence, thoughtfulness, and public spirit. English, Mathematics, Science, French, History, Geography, Art, Music, Drama, ICT, DT, PSHE, PE, and Games are all part of the curriculum for boys. Boys learn Spanish and French on a term-by-term basis from Year 4 to Year 6, and in Year 6, all boys begin Mandarin in their last term. The Senior School department accommodates students from ages 11 to 16. At this level, pupils must take English, Math, one Science subject, and one Modern Language, but after that, they are allowed to choose their own curriculum based on their goals, interests, and abilities. When it comes to choosing Sixth Form topics, this is still the case. Artistic disciplines such as Dance, are among the subjects offered. Politics, Philosophy, and Economics are also a part of the curriculum.
Students of the Sixth Form department are more independent. Students are encouraged to form the habits that will help them succeed in university. Each member of the Sixth Form Team has a distinct role to play in ensuring that students receive the tailored guidance needed, whether it be Careers Guidance or UCAS Assistance.
Facilities and Resources
Students in the different departments at the school have access to a variety of excellent facilities and services. There are well-equipped classrooms, a large gym, an art studio, and a spacious library among these amenities. An Art and Technology block, an ICT centre with an Apple set of computers, a Drama studio, and a medical suite are all available at the school. It also has a large Science laboratory, as well as a Music room and other practice rooms. Students in the Sixth Form have their own Common Room, study space, and café.
