Why Study at Sheffield Hallam University?

Considered the 11th largest university in the UK, Sheffield Hallam University is a public research university with two campuses located in Sheffield. The City Campus is located in the city centre right next to Sheffield railway station while the Collegiate Crescent Campus is located on  Ecclesall Road in south-west Sheffield. The university started out as Sheffield School of Design in 1843 as Sheffield became the centre for steel, tool, and cutlery making. It was then renamed Sheffield School of Art in 1850. The first 90 students were admitted to Sheffield City College of Education on Collegiate Crescent in 1905 before the collegiate hall was requisitioned by the War Office during WWI. The Owen Building was then constructed in a 1960s design, and two years later, the city's College of Technology and the Sheffield School of Design merged to form Sheffield Polytechnic.

In 1976, Sheffield Polytechnic went on to merge with two teacher training colleges, Sheffield City College and Totley Hall College and was renamed Sheffield City Polytechnic. It later became a founding member of the Northern Consortium. Finally, in 1992, Sheffield City Polytechnic was granted the rights to award its own degrees and became Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).

Now, the university ranks in 47th place out of 121 UK universities according to The Guardian University Guide 2021, 67th out of 130 by the Complete University Guide 2021, and 65th out of 131 by The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020. It also received a First Class award as well as The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year award for teaching quality.

Sheffield Hallam University celebrates a community of around 35,000 students, 4,500 staff, and 295,000 alumni around the globe. The university was awarded five stars in the QS Stars international rating system, with top marks for teaching, employability, facilities, innovation, and inclusiveness.
