Why Study at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science

In Willowbrook, California, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a private historically black graduate school. It was founded in 1966 in response to a lack of medical access in Los Angeles' Watts neighbourhood. Charles R. Drew is honoured by the university's name.

In response to the McCone Commission's recommendations to improve access to healthcare in South Los Angeles following the Watts Riots in 1965, Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School was incorporated in the State of California as a private, nonprofit educational institution in 1966. Governor Ronald Reagan signed Senate Bill 1026, authored by State Senator Mervyn Dymally, in 1973, allocating funding and support from the General Fund to the University of California. The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School and the Watts-Willowbrook Regional Medical Program formally opened their offices at 12012 Compton Avenue in January 1970. They would serve as the central hub for CDU operations until the W.M. Cobb Building was built in 1984.

The Chronicles of Higher Education's Almanac of Higher Education ranked CDU as the country's second most diverse private non-profit college. CDU was one of only three private non-profit colleges with a diversity index score of 80 or higher, with an 80.3 out of 100. The rankings were determined by analysing data from the US Department of Education's fall 2015 enrollment.

Since 2000, more than 70% of CDU graduates have come from underrepresented backgrounds, and more than 80% of alums have gone on to serve in underserved communities. "The University continues to rebuild and rebrand as a comprehensive mid-size university of excellence while never forgetting its historic legacy of enhancing health profession diversity," said CDU President David Carlisle.
