On September 2, 1878, Creighton College was established as a gift from Mary Lucretia Creighton. She stipulated in her will that a school be established in memory of her husband, prominent Omaha businessman Edward Creighton. John A. Creighton, Edward's brother, is credited with fostering and sustaining the university's early growth and endowment. Creighton Preparatory Schools and Creighton University were formed from the college in 1958.

The schools and colleges at Creighton are: College of Arts & Sciences, Heider College of Business (formerly known as the College of Business Administration), College of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy & Health Professions, School of Law, Graduate School, College of Professional Studies and The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest school, containing about 28% of the university's enrolled students. Creighton's acceptance rate is 72.7%.
In 2018, the university announced a Phoenix Health Sciences Campus, which opened in 2021.

Creighton University Student Housing
Creighton University has eight on-campus residence halls to serve students, whether they are freshmen or seniors, Deglman Hall, Kiewit Hall, Swanson Hall, Heider Hall, Kenefick Hall, McGloin Hall, Davis Square, and Opus Hall. Most of these buildings consisted of four-ten floors with more than 70 rooms for the students ready for them to stay in.
Suite-style housing hall floors feature private bathrooms accessible between two shared rooms (four residents). Bathrooms include two sinks. Apartment-style housing hall floors feature shared or private bedrooms and bathrooms accessible from within the apartment.
There are fully furnished rooms, Wi-Fi, pet-friendly, washer and dryer, clubhouse entertainment centre with media wall, complimentary tanning, 24-hour business centre with free printing, 24-hour two-story fitness centre, fire pit and grilling area, study rooms and lounges. The rent includes an internet connection, water, and a washer and dryer.
