Why Study at California Institute of Technology (CalTECH)?

The California Institute of Technology was founded in the late 1800s to early 1900s. It is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that fosters some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative resources to address fundamental scientific questions and pressing societal challenges. CalTech is an independent, privately supported institution located in Pasadena, California. The Institute manages JPL for NASA as well as owns and operates large-scale research facilities, such as the Seismological Laboratory and a global network of astronomical observatories, including the Palomar and W. M. Keck Observatories. CalTech also co-founded and co-manages LIGO. The California Institute of Technology is top-ranked on several university ranking scales; it is ranked second on the Times Higher Education Universities scale, seventh on the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, ninth on the US Best New Colleges scale, and sixth on the QS World Ranking scale. The institute has a 3:1 student to faculty ratio and accepts an annual population of the brightest students both locally and internationally. Currently, CalTech has around 1,500 graduate students and around 500 undergraduate students. The institute’s alumni and faculty have gone on to win a total of 46 Nobel Prizes.

Departments and Divisions

CalTech’s education is notable for its rigorous curriculum, close collaborations with faculty, and small class sizes. Caltech students can apply for undergraduate and graduate degrees. There are around 30 graduate and undergraduate majors and minors for students to choose from. These fields of study include Applied Physics, Biology, Business, Economics, and Management, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Astrophysics, Aerospace, and Bioengineering, to name a few. The institute also has a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, where every summer hundreds of undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct their own research projects under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the frontiers of their fields.

Facilities and Resources

CalTech is a small, collaborative community where faculty, scholars, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences live, work, and engage with one another. The institute has a vibrant and busy campus life and is fitted with several resources and facilities that not only help students excel academically and in research, but also help them excel socially and athletically.

Athletics and Recreation

A number of diverse sports and recreational activities take place on the CalTech campus. The institute is equipped with a number of facilities to support its students' athletic and recreational activities. With the CalTech Y, students have gone on cultural trips to South America and India; hiked and camped on weekend trips; volunteered at local schools; and listened to ambassadors talk about science policy. CalTech Y gives students the opportunity to get involved, take part in community service programmes, and engage in over 70 annual programmes offered by the CalTech Y, including Social and Cultural Outreach, Outdoor Adventures, and Educational Programmes.
